Day 3- Isle Royale
We boarded the Isle Royale ferry at 8:00 am bound for Isle
Royale island, 58 miles from Copper Harbor , cost of the ferry isn’t cheap
around 220.0 for two round trip. We are staying at
the Rock Harbor Lodge on the Island, the cost is steep and reservations a
must. It’s the only hotel on the island
and it closes by September 7th until Spring. The ferry reached the island in about 3 ½
hours. We were lucky today the Lake was
very calm so required no motion sickness pills and felt energized to hike
today.
The depth of Lake Superior is 600 to over 1000 feet deep in
spots. Temperature this time of year is
around 50 degrees, however, this year it’s at around 60 degrees.
We hiked the Stoll trail today (named after Albert Stoll a
conservationist who was instrumental in preserving Isle Royale as a National
Park) to Scoville point (a copper prospector) back on the Tobin Harbor Trail. A relatively short hike (4.5
miles) passing many different plant species, flora, rocky shorelines, as well
as the remains of the Smithwick Copper Mine.
Read a quote today from some of the literature on the
island. “Lake Superior buffers Isle
Royale from human abuse, yet creates a mystique that tempts human
curiosity. Lake Superior assures that
there is no other place like Isle Royale".
Although we have only been here and explored a ½ day we can surely
attest to this. We are in awe of its
beauty and the fact that this is Pure Michigan.
